PKU Warning and 

Aspartame Information

Question : Several of the Gematria products carry 

the same warning that products with aspartame 

have. Does this mean that your products contain aspartame  ?

This is a great question for clarification. Our Gematria formulas do 

NOT contain Aspartame. However several of our formulas such as

 Lite Body Gems, Muscle Gems, Gem Aminos and Complete Aminos carry the following warning : WARNING FOR PHENYLKETONURICS (PKU) – CONTAINS THE AMINO ACID PHENYLALANINE. This is because these formulas contain the amino acid phenylalanine in either the L or DL form. 

The reason that products that DO contain aspartame also carry this warning Is because aspartame is a combination of two amino acids – phenylalanine and aspartic acid. These are joined in a reverse linkage the body cannot digest normally. Due to this synthetic linkage, attempts of the body to break down aspartame may result in by products  suggested by some authors to be potentially stressful to the nervous system. Due to the chemical restructuring, aspartame is no longer considered an amino acid and no longer works the same way in the body as the phenylalanine that is in the Gematria formulas.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a genetic disorder that is characterized by an inability of the body to utilize the essential amino acid, phenylalanine. Amino acids are the building blocks for all body proteins. “Essential” amino acids can only be obtained from the foods we eat as our body does not normally produce them.  

In PKU, the enzyme that breaks down phenylalanine is deficient or non-existent. This enzyme normally converts phenylalanine to another amino acid, tyrosine. Without this enzyme phenylalanine and it’s breakdown chemicals from other enzyme routes, accumulate in the blood and body tissues. Chronically high levels of phenylalanine and some of it’s breakdown products can cause significant brain problems  in people with PKU. Therefore, phenylalanine is restricted 

in their diets to avoid this buildup.

Other than persons with PKU, L- phenylalanine provides many 

benefits for the body and may improve energy, alertness and mental concentration. D- phenylalanine boosts endorphin activity in the brain; similar to the effects of eating chocolate, runners high or falling in 

love.
